The more honestly you identify the job, the fewer expensive compromises appear later.

Think in terms of your regular use. Are you standing under hot lights? Traveling frequently? Switching between standard and lower tunings? Playing clean, high-headroom parts, or pushing gain through a loud backline? These details affect neck profile, fret choice, pickup output, weight, balance, bridge design, and electronics.

A custom build should solve the things you notice after the first set, not merely impress in the first five minutes. If your current instrument feels neck-heavy, causes fatigue, loses tuning stability, or requires constant tone adjustments, put that in writing. Those are design requirements, not minor preferences.

Build a Clear Commission Brief

A builder can make better decisions when your direction is specific, but specificity does not mean arriving with every measurement pre-decided. The strongest commissions establish the non-negotiables, then leave room for expert judgment where it matters.

Your brief should cover five areas:

  • Intended musical role, including tuning, string gauge, and the sounds you need most often

Photos can help communicate finish color, body proportions, or hardware styling. They should not become a demand to copy another maker’s design line for line. The point of commissioning is to build an instrument that belongs to you.

Choose the Decisions That Change the Experience

Some specifications are easy to revise later. Others define the instrument from the first note. Focus your early conversations on the choices that are costly or impractical to change after the build is complete.

Scale Length and Neck Geometry

Scale length affects tension, attack, intonation feel, and how the instrument responds to your preferred string gauge. A shorter scale can feel more elastic and forgiving. A longer scale generally delivers a firmer feel, clearer low end, and more authority with lower tunings. Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on your hands, tuning, and the way you articulate notes.

Neck profile and fretboard radius deserve the same attention. Players often describe a neck as fast, but that word hides a lot. A neck may feel fast because it is shallow, because the shoulders fit the hand well, because the fretwork is excellent, or because the setup is dialed for a light touch. Tell the builder where your hand gets tired and what profiles have felt natural over long rehearsals.

Body Design, Weight, and Balance

A body can look exceptional on a stand and still fight you onstage. Weight distribution matters more than a single number on a scale. Strap-button placement, upper-horn length, body contouring, and headstock mass all influence whether the instrument stays where you put it.

Two pieces of the same species can differ in weight and response, while the final instrument’s design choices may have a greater practical effect.

Ask about weight range, resonance goals, stability, grain orientation, and finish options. A thin finish may suit a player seeking a more open-feeling response, while a more protective finish can make sense for hard touring use. Exotic tops, figured necks, and specialty finishes bring visual drama, but they can add lead time and cost. Decide whether they serve the instrument’s purpose or simply distract from it.

Hardware is less romantic and often more consequential. Bridge design affects intonation range, palm comfort, string changes, and tuning stability. Locking tuners, quality nuts, precise fretwork, and a correctly cut setup do more for daily confidence than many headline specifications.

Set a Budget With Priorities

A commission budget is not just the final price. It is a set of decisions about where the money earns the most value for your playing. Core construction, fretwork, hardware, and setup should receive priority because they determine whether the instrument remains dependable years after the new-build excitement fades.

Custom finishes, rare materials, elaborate inlays, and intricate electronics can be worthwhile, but be clear about their place in the budget. If you have a fixed ceiling, ask the builder what they would protect first. A knowledgeable shop will help you distinguish between upgrades that improve performance and upgrades that mainly increase visual rarity.

Leave room for a proper case, setup refinements after the instrument settles, and any accessories required for your working environment. If the build will replace a primary instrument, it should arrive ready to earn its place, not create a second round of immediate expenses.

Treat the Timeline as Part of the Build

Custom work takes time because the instrument is being designed, sourced, constructed, finished, assembled, and set up for a particular player. Lead times vary with builder workload, finish process, specialty parts, and the complexity of the request. A deadline can be helpful, but it should be discussed before finalizing the design, not after materials are ordered.

Ask when approvals happen and what changes are still possible at each stage. Early revisions are usually manageable. A change in scale length, neck construction, finish direction, or routing after the work is underway can affect cost and schedule substantially. Clear approvals protect both the player and the builder.

When the instrument arrives, give it a real evaluation period. Play it seated and standing. Use it through your normal rig. Rehearse with the band, check intonation in your actual tuning, and notice how it behaves after a full set.
